Every woman has the exact love life she wants

~The Wedding Date (2005)

I know someone who is lonely. They feel as though they are alone but they’re not. They’re not because I’m here. I might not be right there connected to their hip but I’m still here….available, praying, loving, believing. But they feel as though they are alone. The truth of the matter is that they chose the loneliness they are feeling. They elected to be in that situation with those circumstances. They have the exact life they want.

When The Wedding Date premiered in 2005 a lot of women objected to the above quote from Debra Messing’s stepfather to her but as you keep living you begin to see the reality of that statement. Your love life is a result of the decisions you make. If you didn’t want what you had you’d make different decisions.

So when you’re lonely you can change that be not pushing people away and allowing them to love you.

A lot of the people I know through blogging have been doing so for 10+ years. I looked at one yesterday and it made me think of the word EVOLUTION. You would hope that in 10 years we’ve all evolved in some manner. Do you think about your own evolution? Do you look at the you that you used to be and compare to the you that you are today? Do you see change?

It gave me pause to think…and reflect. I looked back at the oldest post I could find. The date says April 2006 but that was the month I transferred to my own domain so all of my old posts have that date. I found this one and it makes me wonder what I was going through when I wrote it. I don’t even remember the situation or circumstance but what I find amazing is that I’m positive whatever it was I thought it was the end of the world. And here I am at least 7 years later and I don’t even remember it.

Growth…

During a recent conversation with co-workers we discussed how people used to be ashamed or embarrassed when the news selected the craziest looking person to interview in a crowd. the black people always had rollers in their hair, ill fitting clothes, and spoke broken English. We just KNEW that the reporter had bypassed Randall Pinkett and Ursula Burnes dressed for work in favor of someone who fit a stereotype. WE JUST KNEW IT! That must have been at least a generation ago. Now what happens is that those same embarrassments aren’t just accepted…they’re catapulted into fame and celebrity. Antoine Dodson, Sweet Brown, the kapoyah lady. We’re (we being me and mine) have become convinced that ratchedness and poor behavior draws attention. People amp it up to get more attention. It’s true. Look at reality tv. Have you realized that they think amped up is normal?

When I returned to work following surgery this week, my co-worker asked if I’d seen the story about the newly rescued kidnapped women in Cleveland. I’d heard. But his conversation was all about Charles Ramsey and how he thought he was “amping” up the foolishness in an effort to be the next news story hood sensation.

I relayed that belief to someone and they disagreed and sent me the link to judge for myself. At this point I had heard about the story but not yet seen any interviews. Well when I clicked the link there was no video…only sound…and I was impressed! He said things like “it didn’t register…” and his diction was clear! WHAT WAS MY COWORKER TALKING ABOUT?!?!?!?!?!?

Then I went to Facebook and saw the picture comparing Charles Ramsey to one of Eddie Murphy’s characters from Coming to America and realized what happened. The man SOUNDED intelligent and looked like ratchedness would come out of his mouth at any moment. Then I started seeing the jokes and hearing the mixes. Sigh We just can’t win….but I’m damn sure we’re getting closer. If Charles Ramsey had been one of a group of rescuers I’m sure that the reporters still would have zeroed in on him expecting another foolish black person to giggle at. They’ll be surprised when he opens his mouth and an intelligent person comes out.

It’s 10 years later and I can honestly say that I don’t remember what you’re going through right now. That’s right. I don’t remember being 26. The good thing is that means whatever you think is impossible or terrible right now….isn’t really that bad. If it was I’d still remember it. So whatever it is, let it go and know that it won’t matter in the long run. I’d love to be able to tell you that everything is going to be great when you’re 36 but it won’t. What I can tell you is not to change a thing! Everything coming is coming for a reason. We may not ever know what that reason is but I bet it’s going to be kickass! And 10 years later when you’re crying about all that has taken place, remember that it has been a helluva ride….and appreciate that.

I CAN give you some tips though.

1) It’s okay to be afraid but don’t let it stop you from trying. You’re going to get some opportunities that you won’t believe. They will be scary and completely out of the box for you. It’s ok. You don’t realize yet but you can handle anything. You WILL handle anything and you’ll be okay. I’m not sure when it will happen but one day you’ll realize that you should be fearless and when you do I feel sorry for whatever gets in your way.

2) LOVE HARD! Yes it will hurt. Yes you will get hurt. Yes you will cry. But the good is soooooooo much better than the bad. It’s worth every bit of heartache that you feel. When you love it’s deep love and it makes your soul sing. Don’t give that up for anything!

3) Perfection is impossible so aim for happy. I know you. Right now the focus of your life is being perfect in everything. You’re trying to be a rockstar at work and you’re looking for love and the amount of social activities you have going on are borderline phenomenal and ridiculous. Do the things that make you happy and let the rest go somewhere and die.

4) Eventually you’ll meet friends who get you so don’t settle. I know right now you’re wishing for more people in your circle like that and sometimes it gets you down. But don’t settle for the fair weathers. You will come across a lot of them in your life but when you meet the A Team you’ll know it and you will appreciate them so much.

I can’t tell you that I know what all the future holds for us because I’m still putting the puzzle pieces together myself and the puzzle grows bigger and bigger every day.
