Dear Diary,
Sometimes I wonder if other people learn new things about life as often as I do. I literally recognize a new lesson each day I wake up. Some of them aren’t earth shattering of course. For example, if there is frost on the ground then you should at least have a jacket on. That’s a simple concept, but it’s not something that people realize. If the temperature for the day is going to be in the 60’s then you don’t necessarily think about grabbing a jacket. But if there is frost on the ground then you need one.
I think I’m formulating a new idea right now (right now not meaning at this moment…but more like at this moment in my life). Last night I was talking to Kerry about Valentine’s Day and she commented that in the 9 years we have been friends, she has never known me to celebrate or do anything special. I guess I’d never paid it that much attention. The last time I specifically remember a February 14th was the year I went to jail (that’s a story for another day). I think subconsciously I subscribe to the theory that people show their love for each other every day.
But today while I’m sitting here surrounded by people getting flowers and singing shit I asked myself if maybe it’s not so much about love but appreciation.
ap·pre·ci·a·tion (ə-prē’shē-ā’shən) n.
1. Recognition of the quality, value, significance, or magnitude of people and things.
2. A judgment or opinion, especially a favorable one.
3. An expression of gratitude.
4. Awareness or delicate perception, especially of aesthetic qualities or values.
5. A rise in value or price, especially over time.
Everyone wants to be appreciated Diary. There are times in our lives where we genuinely go above and beyond what is required in a relationship and although it’s not done for praise, maybe today is the day when husbands take a little time to tell their wives “I appreciate the moments when you cover US.” and when wives go the extra mile to tell their husbands “I appreciate how you take care of OUR family.”
I know sometimes we’re in situations where instead of being appreciative, people can become ‘put off’ by the situation itself and not even give consideration to the effort being put into it. Maybe that’s why today is so special to people. Because after all of the hard work and effort, someone is saying “I appreciate you.” I think appreciation is just as important as love.
